DANVILLE — Martina Allen drew a picture of her mother when she served in the Air Force. Eric Dempsey also drew a portrait of his mother. Sarah Stiner chose to draw Avril Lavigne, while other sixth- and seventh-graders at the Danville Middle School drew Oprah Winfrey and Harriet Tubman.

The subject was an inspirational woman in the Live Your Dream Art contest sponsored by Soroptimist International of America.

Other middle school students, in the classes of Megan Dutrow, entering the contest are Nick Chappell, Zak Stone and Mallory Jones.

Montour County Soroptimist President Kathleen Bates presented each student with a certificate of appreciation and a $1 coin commemorating an admirable woman.

The students' entries will be judged by professional artists with three finalists chosen in each category: kindergarten through third grades, fourth through sixth grades, seven through ninth grades and 10th through 12th grades. Finalists will be posted on the Soroptimist's Live Your Dream Web site by Feb. 15 at liveyourdreamcampaign.org. Visitors to the Web site will be able to vote for their favorite drawing in each grade category to determine the winners.

The Soroptimists will announce the winners on its Web site March 8, which is International Women's Day. There will be one winner in each category receiving $100 and the winner's school will get $100.

March is Women's History Month.
