MILTON -- A 27-year-old Warrior Run High athletic trainer groped a member of the school's state championship girls soccer team while other students were nearby, and sent photos of his genitals and had sex with another female student at his house while his wife wasn't home, according to testimony at a tense preliminary hearing for Matthew M. Godfrey on Wednesday.

Godfrey, of 39 Jasper Lane, Watsontown, has been free on $75,000 bail since his Dec. 29 arrest. He appeared Wednesday before District Judge Robert Bolton on felony charges of dissemination of explicit sexual materials to a minor, corruption of minors and two counts of unlawful contact with a minor; and misdemeanor counts of corruption of minors and indecent assault.

The two teens testified in graphic terms that Godfrey, who also served for a time as the school's assistant athletic director, engaged in "sexting," fondled one of the girls, and had consensual sex with the other at school and at his residence -- while his wife wasn't at home.

The 17-year-old, "Teen 1," testified that as a player on the school's girls soccer team, Godfrey massaged her legs, and then began to touch her inappropriately, even with other students close by.

She told the court the first incident occurred in August 2010 -- when she was 16 -- after she suffered a leg injury from playing in school sports. Months later, the girls soccer team went on to win the first of two back-to-back state titles.

The other girl, "Teen 2," testified that she and Godfrey had sex at school and at his home.

The case came to light Dec. 21, when Milton state police Trooper Ty Brininger was called to investigate the allegations of inappropriate touching and sexual relations. He told 1st Assistant District Attorney Ann Targonski that he took statements from the victims, then went directly to the school to talk with Godfrey.

"(Godfrey) admitted to me that he knew she was 17," Brininger testified. "He also admitted he sent text messages of a sexual nature, but in a 'joking manner.'"

But under cross-examination by Godfrey's attorney, Christian D. Frey, of Lepley, Engleman and Yaw, of Williamsport, Brininger said he had never seen the text messages.

Those text messages were not available and could not be provided to the court, both teens testified.

Teen 2 took the stand and described a slowly developing relationship with Godfrey, which began as a friendship.

"I had a knee injury," she said, "and he was the school trainer, so I'd go in for treatments" in June.

In time, Teen 2 became a student athletic trainer.

"We became friends," she said.

But the relationship changed when "(Godfrey) texted me one night and said he was physically attracted to me," Teen 2 testified.

Those texts became more and more of a sexual nature, she said.

In subsequent texts, "He said he wanted to do stuff with me, like have oral sex. And sex."

At first, she said, she didn't know how to respond.

"I went along with it," she said.

Then, Teen 2 alleges, Godfrey started sending pictures. One, she said, "of his penis."

The texting eventually progressed to touching and having sex, Teen 2 testified.

"On more than one occasion," she said.

It happened in a school bathroom, and at his house, she said.

The relationship lasted until November.

Under cross-examination, Frey asked Teen 2 if she ever resisted Godfrey's advances.

"There was a time I told him to stop," she said. "And he would. But then the texting would pick up again."

Teen 2 told Frey she could not produce the text messages.

Teen 1 then took the stand. She said that when she was 16, and on the Warrior Run girls soccer team, she pulled a quadriceps.

"That was when he started treating me," she said of August 2010. "He would do massages, as well as other treatments."

At some point, Teen 1 testified, Godfrey would "move his hands up under my shorts up to the vagina area. I did tell him to stop. And he did."

But Godfrey began texting her. Sometimes about soccer; other times it was suggestive, Teen 1 testified.

"I felt uncomfortable," Teen 1 said. "He asked if I liked being touched in those areas. Again, I told him to stop, and again, he did. But sometimes he would text me repeatedly until I responded."

Teen 1 said Godfrey wanted her to visit his house while his wife was away.

"He suggested that he would do things of a sexual nature to me," she said.

Teen 1 never went to Godfrey's house, she said. And they never had sexual intercourse.

Under cross-examination, attorney Frey reiterated that none of the texts were available to corroborate accusations against Godfrey.

Bolton forwarded the case to Northumberland County Court.

A trial date has yet to be set.
