SHAMOKIN -- The Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce's Business & Education Committee will hold a career symposium Thursday at Luzerne County Community College, 2 E. Arch St.

The symposium's theme is "Brush Valley: Gateway to Your Future," and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.

The sessions are geared to 10th-graders, but 11th- and 12th-graders are welcome, said organizers.

Students from Shamokin Area High School, Mount Carmel Area High School, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School, Line Mountain High School, Northwestwestern Academy and Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit will participate. The goal is to educate the region's youths on career opportunities in the area and to make them more aware of the educational and skill requirements necessary to finding work.

The career symposium will begin with a FUTURES update at 8:50 a.m. FUTURES -- Fossil Underwriting Technology to Utilize Renewable Energy Sources -- aims to create jobs by providing a business-friendly environment in Northumberland County for research, development and investment in alternative, renewable energy sources and high-tech manufacturing.

After the FUTURES discussion, students will break out into sessions for the rest of the day and explore topics such as starting a businesses or obtaining a loan.
