SUNBURY — Kohl’s Stony Hill Tree Farm is celebrating 34 years this holiday season, and owner Stan Kohl couldn’t be more excited.
Somewhat “excited,” he added.
“When it snows it is a pain for the people going out to get the trees,” Kohl said. “It makes it tough.”
Snow hit the Valley earlier this week and Kohl said even though snow makes things a little more difficult, it motivates people to buy a Christmas tree.
“We will still go and do what we have to,” he said. “It’s all good and we just like when we see everyone coming in to see us.”
Kohl also discussed his passion for Christmas tree stands and the fact his name is now recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records, recognizing his collection of 1,200 tree stands in his shop — none of which are for sale.
Kohl decided to give the record a shot, and after being able to prove his giant collection to Guinness, he was entered into the famous book of records.
“So now we will celebrate,” he said.
“In 2004, when my great Aunt Lena passed away, we had a public sale to dispose of her belongings,” Stan Kohl said.
“She had been somewhat of a hoarder and had tons of things we needed to get rid of. We placed everything in piles and had an auctioneer come and sell off everything. There were Christmas tree stands left and since I was in the Christmas tree business, I was pushed by my cousin to take some home. I looked online and saw what vast Christmas tree stands were being produced.”
Kohl said he took a chance and bought some more stands online and the process went so well he continued to purchase more and more to add to his 5,000 square foot Christmas Shoppe, he said.
In 2012, Kohl decided to add an extra 2,000 square feet to his Christmas Shoppe, which currently has 80,000 holiday ornaments for sale,
“This is a great time of the year,” he said of the holiday season.
Karen Matthews, of Milton, said she buys her trees from Kohl and loves visiting the shop just to look around.
“It just gets you in the mood for the holiday season,” she said. “And once again it is the holiday season and I can’t wait to get my tree and start decorating.”
The event begins at 11 a.m. and runs through 8 p.m.
