DANVILLE — More than $1,500 will go toward the relief efforts in Haiti thanks to a donation by the Central Susquehanna Valley Board of Realtors.
"(The donation) will do a great deal to assist in the relief efforts," said Holly Laubach, disaster services coordinator for the American Red Cross Danville chapter, on Friday. "Any donation is critical for relief efforts at this time."
In less than a week, realtors from around the region were able to collect and raise $1,575 to be donated to the Red Cross chapter for the Haiti Relief Fund.
"CSV Realtors are passionate about the American Dream of homeownership," said Keith Robertson, president of CSVBR. "Realtors extended that philosophy to the Haitian people by donating to those who have lost not only their homes but possibly their families as well."
Laubach said the organization has received a great response from community members and groups interested in assisting the efforts.
Money received will help purchase water containers for storing clean drinking water, blankets, kitchen sets, hygiene materials, and tarps, rope, wood and tools to build temporary shelters.
"There's such devastation, they have to rebuild from scratch," Laubach said. "Food, water and housing for these folks is of critical importance."
The funds received by the Danville chapter will be passed on to the national Red Cross to assist in funding and supplies.
Anyone still interested in donating can support the relief efforts in several ways, including: check, cash or credit card to the local chapter; through the American Red Cross Web site; by calling 1-800-REDCROSS; or texting HAITI to 90999, to add $10 to your regular monthly cell phone bill.
