Youth involved in Scouting learn to make ethical and moral choices through a program based on the Scout Oath and Law. The Susquehanna Council serves over 2,500 youth members. The Scouting program provides many opportunities for adventure, including summer camp at Camp Karoondinha, Cub Scout Day Camp, Camporees, hikes, backpacking and participation at National Scout Adventures such as Philmont Scout Ranch, Sea Base, Boundary Waters and the National Jamboree.

In addition to outdoor adventure, Scouts and adult leaders give many hours of service to their local communities. Eagle Scout service projects provided more than 6,600 hours of service in the past year.

Adult volunteers freely give many hours of their time to serve as role models for the scouts. Most of these volunteers attend leader training to ensure delivery of a quality program to our youth. These youth are the future leaders in our community and in our country.

Scouting is a program that gets results. Men who were scouts were more likely than men with no scouting experience to:

• Graduate from high school

• Graduate from college

• Earn an annual income of more than $50,000.

Scouts with at least five years tenure are more likely than non-scouts to:

• Assume a leadership role in clubs or organizations

• Put the needs of others before themselves

• Make the most honest, not the easiest decisions

• Value education and the environment.

A high-quality Scouting program, like that in the Susquehanna Valley, requires financial commitment. The annual cost of providing the scouting program for one scout is $300.

The Susquehanna Council of the Boy Scouts of America conducts an annual fund raising drive for families of scouts and members of the community to support scouting in the Susquehanna Valley area. Local scout families are making their pledges and contributions for 2010.
