SHAMOKIN — The walls keep tumbling down in Shamokin.
Thursday evening's partial building collapse of an abandoned apartment house on Market Street left debris on a parking lot next door.
The building is located on Market, between West Chestnut and West Arch streets.
No one has lived in the 17-apartment building since 2000. It has been owned by Orlando Development Corporation since 1987.
"This was unexpected," said city Code Enforcement Officer Barry Stoud, Friday. "It's was a shock to me when I heard about it."
Most of the visible damage was on the building's Coal Street side, and ran about half its height.
There were reported blackouts in the immediate neighborhood, caused by broken power lines.
Stroud said they were lucky no one was in the building.
Shamokin fire and rescue personnel stayed outside the building, checking the structure. It was deemed secure, despite the destruction.
Adjacent buildings were unaffected, police said.
