MIFFLINTOWN — Mifflinburg senior Ella Shuck started a little cold on Monday night, but once the Wildcats' guard heated up, it was light out for Juniata in nonleague girls basketball on Monday night.

Penn State has lost defensive back Jeffrey Davis Jr. to the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report from Tyler Donohue of Lions247, the Penn State affiliate for 247Sports.

Quarterbacks Stetson Bennett of Georgia, Max Duggan of TCU, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Caleb Williams of Southern California are the finalists for the Heisman Trophy. The award given to the outstanding player in college football is determined by a vote of more than 900 sports journalists and past winners. It will be presented Saturday night at the Lincoln Center in New York. Williams and Stroud also are finalists for the Maxwell Award as the top performer in the college game. Williams, Stroud and Duggan also are up for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

SELINSGROVE — If Trinity was going to pull off the upset on Friday night over Southern Columbia, the Shamrocks could ill afford any mistakes.

The first meeting between Utah and Penn State will take place in the 109th edition of the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2. The seventh-ranked Utes are making their second consecutive appearance in the Granddaddy of Them All after their 47-24 victory over Southern California in the Pac-12 championship game. No. 9 Penn State is making the trip to Pasadena for the first time since the 2016 season after Big Ten champion Michigan and Ohio State were selected for the College Football Playoff.

Jalen Hurts strengthened his MVP bid by throwing for 380 yards and three touchdowns and running for another score as the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Tennessee Titans 35-10. A.J. Brown caught two touchdowns against his former team. Hurts has led the Eagles to an 11-1 start, their first time with that record since 2004 and the fourth time in franchise history. The speedy, sure-armed QB set a career high with 29 total touchdowns and had his third career game with four total TDs. The Eagles' defense was first-rate, too, bottling up Derrick Henry and limiting Ryan Tannehill to 141 passing yards. Tennessee has lost two straight.

Georgia will be heading back to its home away from home for the College Football Playoff. The No. 1 Bulldogs received the top seed from the selection committee, earning a spot to in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve. The reigning national champions will be in a familiar spot for their semifinal game against No. 4 Ohio State. Georgia will be making its third appearance of the season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Bulldogs opened with a 49-3 demolition of Oregon. On Saturday, they claimed their first Southeastern Conference title since 2017 with a 50-30 rout of LSU.

It’s a new two-year cycle for the PIAA, and that means the Heartland Athletic Conference realigned its divisions. Handicapping the new Division II looks awfully similar to last year’s Division I race.

The PIAA has long struggled with the transition from football to basketball with the gridiron playoffs extending into December. Traditionally, the winter season starts the second Friday of the month.

BENTON — Trailing by four at the end of the third quarter, Line Mountain outscored Benton 20-4 in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles the road victory.

MILLVILLE — Theresa Amarante, Grace Everett, and Maddie Merrill all scored in double figures for the Ironmen, who took third place at the Millville tip-off tournament.

SELINSGROVE — Brandon Lavitt scored eight points to fuel an early second-half run that gave Susquehanna its largest lead Saturday. However, visiting Elizabethtown outscored the River Hawks by nine over the final eight-plus minutes to win the teams' Landmark Conference opener, 57-56, at O.W. …
