CHICAGO (AP) — Gale Sayers, the dazzling and elusive running back who entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame despite the briefest of careers and whose fame extended far beyond the field for decades thanks to a friendship with a dying Chicago Bears teammate, has died. He was 77.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Some Pennsylvania school districts are letting more fans in the stands after a federal judge’s ruling that tossed statewide pandemic limits on crowd size, although legislative Republicans on Wednesday lost an effort to enshrine local control of school sports into law.

MCALISTERVILLE — Kierstyn Fogle scored four goals — two in each half — and East Juniata opened its season with a Tri-Valley League rout of Susquenita 6-0 on Tuesday.

TURBOTVILLE — Jacob Hess finished in a scorching time of 15 minutes, 57 seconds, and Lewisburg brought in five of the top six runners overall to top Warrior Run in boys cross-country Tuesday, 19-42.

LEWISBURG — Ella Reish assisted on Lewisburg’s opening goal, and netted two of her own in the second half as the Green Dragons defeated Mifflinburg 4-2, snapping a three-game losing streak in the process.

MILTON — Despite being outshot, Milton made four first-half goals stand up, and Mo Reiner made eight saves in goal as the Milton girls soccer team beat Warrior Run on Monday, 4-1, in Heartland Athletic Conference-Division II action.

BERWICK — Three Danville players broke 50 at the Berwick Country Club on Monday afternoon to help the Ironmen knock off Central Columbia, 178-196, in Heartland Athletic Conference-Division II golf action.

ALMEDIA — Though Central Columbia picked up a 4-1 victory over Lewisburg in girls tennis action on Monday, the lone win for the Green Dragons was an impressive one in Heartland Athletic Conference-Division II action.

SELINSGROVE — Mifflinburg coach Jason Dressler spoke several times this early season about not being worried if his Wildcats had enough talent to compete, it was whether they believed they could compete in a tough Heartland Athletic Conference-Division II.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Jim Furyk joined Arnold Palmer and Bruce Fleisher as the only players to win their first two PGA Tour Champions starts, beating Jerry Kelly with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff Sunday in the Pure Insurance Championship.

SELINSGROVE — Jess Alba scored three goals, including the lone tally in Selinsgrove’s win over Bloomsburg, as the Seals swept both games in their annual TurfFest Tournament.

COAL TOWNSHIP — Shamokin goalie Dallas Scicchitano made 14 saves to withstand Shikellamy’s 16-shot barrage and keep the Heartland Athletic Conference crossover match scoreless, as the teams tied 0-0 in boys soccer Saturday.

LEWISBURG — Bekah Vance powered through a three-set win at first singles, and Lewisburg swept doubles play to post a 3-2 win over Hughesville in Heartland Athletic Conference-Division II girls tennis Saturday.

NORTHUMBERLAND — Emma Daku-Treas scored an overtime goal to lift Northumberland Christian to a nonleague win in girls soccer action Satuday, 5-4 over Halifax.

COAL TOWNSHIP — Milton took the first five spots in the boys race, and five of the first six places in the girls race to earn a Heartland Athletic Conference-Division I cross-country sweep on Saturday.

SELINSGROVE — From the outside, it seemed to be a 27-yard field goal that just barely cleared the crossbar to bring Mifflinburg within four points of rival Lewisburg on Friday night. 

MILL HALL — The Central Mountain defense limited Selinsgrove to 131 yards of offense, and made a first-quarter Ryan Pentz TD run stand up, as the Wildcats improved to 2-0 with a 7-3 victory over the Seals on Friday night in Heartland Athletic Conference-Division I action.
