Susquehanna 65, Goucher 50
TOWSON, Md. — Susquehanna earned its first Landmark Conference win of 2013-14 on Wednesday night by defeating Goucher 65-50 at the Decker Sports & Rec Center.
Susquehanna (7-6, 1-2 Landmark) improves to 11-2 against Goucher since the Landmark began in 2007.
Less than midway through the second half, Goucher (5-8, 1-2) trimmed SU’s lead to three (39-36) with 14:47 to go but the Crusaders responded when Nicole Gault and Mariah Monahan combined to shoot 6-for-6 from the charity stripe over the next three minutes to jump ahead by 11 (47-36) and go on to the eventual 15-point win.
SU jumped out to a 10-4 lead to begin the game thanks in part to six points from Gault. The Crusaders expanded their advantage to 10 (19-9) with 10:36 remaining after a three-point play by freshman Sofia Schedler.
The Gophers cut the SU lead to six (21-15) but seven consecutive points from Nikki Komara handed the Crusaders a 13-point cushion (33-20) with 3:26 left in the first half.
Komara poured in 13 first-half points behind 6-of-7 shooting and Monahan and Gault combined for 13 opening period points as the Crusaders went into intermission with a 35-28 lead. SU shot 51.9 percent and held the Gophers to 36 percent shooting in the opening half.
Even though Goucher pulled within three with nearly 15 minutes to play in the second half, Susquehanna never relinquished its lead en route to the 65-50 victory.
