Penn State’s five-point loss to Texas during the NCAA Tournament over the weekend capped one of the most successful seasons in program history. Of the Nittany Lions’ 23 wins, 11 came against teams that reached this season’s national tourney. Penn State’s first-round NCAA Tournament win was its first since 2001, and its 23 wins tied a program-high for the fourth-most in a season.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State leading scorer Jalen Pickett didn’t register more than 17 points during Penn State’s four-game losing streak that began on the first day of February. During the stretch, Pickett also scored 15 points on two occasions with a 12-point output in a loss at Purdue.

SELINSGROVE — Brandon Lavitt had not made a 3-pointer all season for the Susquehanna men's basketball team, 0-for-7 on the year for three-pointers. He was told to no longer shoot them.

Rick Pitino is back in the Big East Conference. St. John’s has hired the Hall of Fame coach to boost a storied program that's been mired in mediocrity for much of this century. The school posted the announcement on Twitter, and Pitino is expected to be formally introduced during a news conference Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. Following a successful run at nearby mid-major Iona, the 70-year-old Pitino was plucked away to replace Mike Anderson, who was fired March 10 after four seasons in charge of the Red Storm without making the NCAA Tournament.

Zach Edey scored 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and No. 5 Purdue hung on to beat Penn State 67-65 in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. The Boilermakers led by as much as 17 in the second half but the lead shrunk to one point in the closing seconds. Purdue won its second conference tournament title. Purdue led 66-60 when Penn State's Myles Dread nailed a 3 with 16 seconds remaining. Evan Mahaffey then stole Brandon Newman’s inbound pass and fed Wynter for a layup that made it a one-point game with six seconds remaining. Purdue’s Fletcher Loyer one free throw but missed the second.
