ELLIOTSBURG — Greenwood’s field hockey has a saying the “next two minutes” that the team has embodied all season.
The saying comes from the way the team responds to goals of any kind when playing. Goals scored by the team are expected to be followed up as well as goals from the opposition.
In Tuesday night’s opening round of the PIAA Class A, Greenwood lived by that phrase one more time as it responded with multiple goals at the end of each half to defeat District 4 runner-up Bloomsburg 6-0.
“For us, it means after a goal we have to keep up the intensity,” Greenwood’s Hailey Womer said. “We have to keep going with it so we always try to get the ball right back and create more scoring opportunities. We just try to keep that momentum going.”
Leah Bryner opened the game with a goal. She beat Nadja Hartmann with a shot to the top of the goal for the game’s first tally.
In the final five minutes of the half, Kenedy Stroup punched in a goal off an assist from Bryner. Womer then tallied the half’s third goal with a hard, low shot to the far corner of the goal for a 3-0 lead in favor of Greenwood.
The goal helped her reach 101 points on her career.
“You never want to get a goal and then turn around and give one back the other way,” Greenwood coach Kent Houser said. “We really focus on that and it was good to get one and get another one. It gave us breathing room at halftime.”
The second half saw the Wildcats add three more goals, but it also saw the Panthers challenge more after making a change to their formation.
Emma Rolston scored twice in the second half, and Womer tallied her second goal as Greenwood advanced to the second round where it will play Springfield (Montgomery County), a 7-0 winner over Landsdale Catholic.
