Penn State senior specialist Jordan Stout on Tuesday was named one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award. The Ray Guy Award is annually given to “the nation’s best collegiate punter.”

Stout joins Matt Araiza (San Diego State) and Adam Korsak (Rutgers) as finalists.

On Monday, Stout was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after averaging 42.9 yards per punt in Saturday’s win against Rutgers. He had a long of 53 yards, and pinned the Scarlet Knights’ offense inside its 20-yard line on six of his eight punts.

Stout’s 46.5 yards-per-punt average this season ranks second in the Big Ten.

Nittany Lions lose a legendFormer Penn State captain and fullback Steve Smith died at the age of 57 on Saturday, ending a 20-year battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Smith served as a captain on the 1986 Penn State national championship team, and finished his collegiate career with 1,246 yards rushing 13 total touchdowns. He was selected in the third round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders.

Smith played for Raiders from 1987-1993, and spent the 1994-1995 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

“The Raiders Family is deeply saddened by the passing of Steve Smith, who valiantly battled Lou Gehrig’s Disease for two decades,” the Oakland Raiders said in a statement. “Steve and his wife Chie are an inspiration, smiling every day while always working for a cure for ALS. The prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with Chie, their children Dante and Jazmin, and their grandson Little Steve.”

Team CanadaFive Nittany Lions with Canadian roots had roles in closing out the 2021 home schedule in the win column.

Freshman quarterback Christian Veilleux (Ottawa, Ontario) in relief effort threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns. His 36 yards rushing were good enough to finish the contest as Penn State’s second-leading rusher.

Wide receiver Malick Meiga (Saint-Jérôme, Québec) posted a career-high 67 yards receiving and one touchdown on one catch. The touchdown marked the first for the second-year player. Sophomore tight end Theo Johnson (Windsor, Ontario) added 9 yards receiving on two catches.

Defensively for the Nittany Lions, redshirt senior safety Jonathan Sutherland (Ottawa, Ontario) tallied four total tackles and one interception. His fourth-quarter interception extended the Penn State defense’s turnover streak to 17 games. Senior defensive end/linebacker Jesse Luketa (Ottawa, Ontario) recorded a tackle.
