TURBOTVILLE — Voters in the Warrior Run School District have voted to eliminate the occupation tax and replace it with an increased earned income tax, but it was a close vote.

The referendum passed 1,055-991, or 51.6 percent to 48.4 percent.

The school district encompasses municipalities in Northumberland, Union and Montour counties.

In Northumberland County, voters in McEwensville, Turbotville, Watsontown, Delaware Township and Lewis Township were 793-663 in favor of the referendum.

Voters in Gregg Township, Union County, however, opposed the measure, voting 115 against and 94 in favor of the proposal.

Limestone Township and Anthony Township in Montour County also were opposed by 213-168.

On July 1, 2008, the occupation tax will be eliminated and will immediately be replaced by an equivalent earned income tax at a rate totaling 1.8 percent.
